The Nvidia Shield TV Pro launches alongside a new standard Nvidia Shield model, priced more affordably at $149.99. In terms of what it can do, it’s a very similar product, with the same processor bump and upscaling features as the Pro.

But in terms of industrial design, they couldn’t be more different – the standard Shield is shaped like a relay baton, and is designed to sit behind your TV, out of sight, the cylindrical shape used for its Wi-Fi signal boosting properties, apparently. It comes with the new remote, too.

With just 8GB of built-in storage, only 2GB of RAM, and no full-size USB ports (microSD cards will instead be needed for storage expansion, while USB controllers will be a pain to get working), Nvidia is aiming this one squarely at media consumers, while the Pro is for the gamer that likes to tinker under the hood.

Bottom line

To recap, the Shield TV Pro has a number of advantages over its cheaper cousin:

• USB ports
• More storage and RAM
• Some exclusive games
• Smart-home hub potential
• Plex media server functionality

Just about everything else about the devices is identical — save for the physical design, which is a matter of taste. They both run the same apps; they both let you stream your own games through GeForce Now; they both let you upscale 1080p movies to 4K with a sophisticated AI algorithm; they both come with the same remote; they both let you use any Bluetooth game controller you see fit.

I don’t have a strong recommendation between the two devices. I don’t personally run smart- home gear, so the regular Shield TV would suit my needs just fine, and I’d use the $50 for a GeForce Now game on Steam. But I also see the appeal of running a Plex server without having my computer on 24/7, a feature for which it might be worth sacrificing an extra game.

Я бы назвал Shield TV (2017) высококлассным стриминговым ресивером. Традиционным аудиофильским штукам за 100 тысяч эта приставка уступает только в коммуникационных возможностях.
В базовой версии портов минимум: 2 USB 3.0, прогрессивный HDMI 2.0b с поддержкой CEC для управления телевизором/приставкой с одного пульта и гигабитный LAN. Улучшенная модификация дооборудована картридером, microUSB и дополнительным инфракрасным приемником для работы универсальных пультов от других систем.

Обе оснащены современным двухдиапазонным модулем Wi-Fi и Bluetooth 4.1. Скорость на максимуме, так что использование приставки действительно не предполагает большого количества проводных подключений или большого объема внутренней памяти.

Стриминг и беспроводные технологии зависят только от качества связи. С ней в Shield TV все отлично. Who is it Not For?

If you just simply want to upgrade your old NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro model, I recommend sticking to your current device instead unless you prefer to have AI picture enhancements and a better processor.

There’s not really a large difference that I have observed, to be frank about it.

Again, if you are just looking to watch Movies and TV Shows, I strongly suggest a cheaper device such as the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k.

Verdict

There’s not much new within this Nvidia Shield TV Pro edition, but that doesn’t stop it being an essential buy for newcomers to the product. It’s unrivalled when it comes to its 4K HDR streaming capabilities, has wide app support thanks to its Android TV foundations, and is littered with potential for gamers, whether playing games stored locally on the device or over the net through the GeForce Now service.

However, there’s a bit of a learning curve to the many tricks the Shield Pro is capable of, and you’re going to need a strong web connection to take advantage of all its gaming powers. Android TV as an interface needs some finessing too (as does GeForce Now’s game browsing library) – but any faults with Android TV lie with Google, not Nvidia.

What is disappointing is the price – for the same cost as the older Shield TV Gaming edition, the Shield Pro really only adds a processor bump and a nifty upscaling feature. And that’s at the expense of a bundled Nvidia Shield controller, which we were fans of. As a result, what was already an expensive streaming proposition offers less value than with previous generations.

As a device then, it’s almost unreservedly recommended. But it may sting to know that the Shield TV Pro isn’t quite the deal it once was.

TV-приставка или консоль?

Изначально, TV-box nVidia Shield TV Pro 2019 позиционируется как игровая консоль на платформе Android. Вся начинка нацелена на максимальную производительность в играх. А что интересно, приставка вовсе не ограничивается приложениями Андроид. Вся фишка в том, что ТВ бокс с легкостью запустит на максимальных настройках игрушки из nVidia Games. Да, те самые, в которые геймеры привыкли играть на персональном компьютере или ноутбуке. Более детально об этом рассказывает Бабл в своем часовом обзоре (видео выше).

Что касается возможностей Shield TV Pro по проигрыванию видео контента в формате 4К, то здесь полный порядок. Полное отсутствие троттлинга (активное охлаждение), поддержка всевозможных видео кодеков, декодирование лицензионного звука в удобный формат. И куча других настроек, которые пригодятся пользователю в эксплуатации приставки

Единственное, на что следует обратить внимание – это на цену ТВ бокса. Если покупатель не планирует «юзать» крутые nVidia игрушки, а мечтает о всеядной приставке для 4К телевизора, то смысла покупать Shield TV Pro нет

NVIDIA Shield в рамках Android и за их пределами

В качестве базовой программной среды NVIDIA Shield использует операционную систему Android версии 4.2.1 с минимальными изменениями. Фактически, можно считать что приставка использует «чистую» редакцию платформы Google – что позволяет ей иметь прекрасную совместимость с подавляющим большинством приложений и игр в Goolge Play Store.

Android 4.2.1. Практически 100% чистоты

В качестве предустановленных бонусов к операционной системе NVIDIA Shield идут несколько оптимизированных под приставку игр, приложение ShieldHelp – своеобразный гайд по функциям приставки и утилита TegraZone – открывающая доступ устройству к магазину игр, специально разработанных или оптимизированных для NVIDIA Shield. Также TegraZone запускает и позволяет работать режим потокового воспроизведения на приставке игр с домашнего ПК.

Design

Arguably the biggest difference between the Shield TV and the Shield TV Pro is aesthetic. The Shield TV Pro looks almost identical to the last-gen Shield TV: an angular black box with green highlights at tasteful locations. It’s an attractive player, but it’s not radically different from an Apple TV or Roku box, save for being a little bit longer.

The Shield TV, on the other hand, has had a top-to-bottom redesign. Instead of a box, the device is a big black cylinder, sort of like a giant cigar tube. You run the power through one side and the HDMI through the other, so it should sit nicely in most entertainment centers. While I was skeptical at first, the Shield TV’s odd design won me over, although I think it’s going to earn as many detractors as fans.

Both devices have Ethernet ports. The difference between the two is in how they handle expandable storage. While the Shield TV has a microSD card slot, the Shield TV Pro has two USB slots. As such, you can expand storage on both devices, but the Shield TV’s solution is a little prettier, while the Shield TV Pro’s solution is a little more versatile.

Because the Shield TV Pro accepts USB drives, it also has more smart-home options than the standard Shield TV, but we’ll get to that a little later.

Что может Nvidia Shield в России? Немало

Новые технологии приживаются в нашей стране с трудом. Доступное Ultra HD победоносно шагает по миру, а для российского пользователя эта технология все еще в новинку. Про расширенный динамический диапазон и увеличенное число цветов в гамме слышали и вовсе единицы.

Но телевизоры есть. И должной настойчивости, они немногим дороже обычных Full HD. Вот только источников русскоязычного контента еще мало.Для Nvidia Shield TV представили свои приложения многие российские стриминговые сервисы: Ivi, «Амедиатека», Megogo. Есть даже фирменные MTS TV, НТВ и SPB TV. Но Ultra HD там нет.

«Правильные» трансляции в 4К HDR можно найти в видеосервисе Amazon Video и каталоге Netflix. И с русской озвучкой там негусто, хотя ситуация медленно меняется к лучшему. Если знаешь английский, то контента масса: все сериалы Netflix выходят в Ultra HD. «Очень странные дела», «Сорвиголова», «Карточный домик». Среди них несколько выпущены с HDR.

Контента будет больше — 4K HDR является наиболее перспективным стандартом видеовещания на ближайшие 5-10 лет. Постепенно ему уступят и российские пользователи.

А купить телевизор поможет GeForce NOW.

Конечно, его работа не идеальна — но сервис предоставляет услуги, позволяющие отказаться от настольного компьютера стоимостью в 50-70 тысяч! Добавь чуть-чуть, и хватит на крутой ТВ. Ощущения от игр и фильмов в максимальном качестве на Nvidia Shield TV того стоят.
Хотя этим не ограничится. Если захочешь стримить с домашнего компьютера, придется обновляться. Мощности должно хватать и на игру, и на трансляцию. Так что нужен топовый процессор и GTX 1080 (кстати, именно такую мощность получает пользователь GeForce NOW).

Еще придется обновить роутер: трансляции даже с компьютера на приставку очень требовательны к качеству связи. Для работы GeForce NOW и вовсе потребуется постоянная связь на скорости не меньше 15 Мбит/с при трансляции в HD и 30 Мбит/с – для Full HD. Без пинга, просадки скорости и задержек другого рода. Так и до смены провайдера может дойти. Зато игра будет комфортна, и не потребует шумного блока за кучу денег.

Recovery Images

NVIDIA also publishes binary «recovery images» for users wishing to revert to factory or OTA images for the P1988 and P1988W. Download recovery images from the Download Center (unpack instructions are provided there; the linux package does not require a login).

NOTE: Before attempting to flash a recovery image, you must have the lastest fastboot executable from the Android SDK (available under the «Get just the command line tools» heading) installed on the host machine.

Пусть это не главное, но Shield TV отлично дополнит любой интерьер и систему. Дизайн невероятно крутой, в духе современных игровых ПК и ноутбуков: куча полигонов, разные текстуры и фирменная зеленая подсветка.

Приставка легко впишется и в классический интерьер с мебелью из натурального дерева, и в металлический хайтек. Просто поставь рядом с телевизором, и аккуратно соедини провода. Хочешь — на бок, хочешь — лежа. Для большей свободы можно докупить специальную подставку в официальном магазине Nvidia.
Существует две модификации Nvidia Shield TV: достаточно крупная Pro-версия (если вы видели первый вариант — используется ее корпус) и уменьшенная, дешевая версия без подставки. Отличий немного — количество портов и емкость внутреннего накопителя. Живьем габариты почти неразличимы. Если есть «файлопомойка», но нет ресивера с многоканальной акустикой — можно брать дешевле.

Specs

One fairly major difference between the two gadgets is how much power they offer under the hood. First, both devices contain a Tegra X1+ processor, meaning that they can both take advantage of the Shield TV’s ambitious AI upscaling protocol. They’re also both good at running video games, whether on their own hard drives or through the surprisingly robust GeForce Now game-streaming service.

The best handheld gaming consoles

However, as its name suggests, the Shield TV Pro is a much more powerful device. Whereas the regular Shield TV contains 8 GB storage and 2 GB RAM, the Pro offers 16 GB storage and 3 GB RAM. Whether that’s worth an additional $50 is up to you, but if you’re interested in running some of the Nvidia-exclusive Android-optimized console games, the Pro is your only option. These include titles like Half-Life 2, Tomb Raider (2013) and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Fair warning, though: There aren’t that many of these games, and GeForce Now runs them better anyway.

What I Don’t Like

Like the basic SHIELD TV model, there are certain features of the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro that make it frustrating considering that the update has taken a few years to arrive.

Hardware

To make it worse, they’ve also removed the MicroSD slot for storage expansion.

It’s inevitable to be warned with a “low space” message when the unit is about to be full of downloaded content, especially when you’ve already enjoyed building your gaming library.

Take note that the USB ports may also interfere with Bluetooth signals, which can be lost intermittently or degrade in performance.

For the remote control, it still lacks a headphone jack for viewers who want private listening.

It’s the same issue I’ve had in the previous version and it still is a wonder why the makers haven’t thought of integrating such feature when they’ve already thought of adding.

Storage

For those who have gotten used to the old version, a 500GB storage space being reduced to 16GB is disappointing.

Serious gamers are known not to compromise their experience over affordability and this has lead other NVIDIA fans to suspect that it has redirected its marketing efforts towards movie streamers instead.

It does not also move the data of any downloaded application to an external drive so expect for your storage to be used up pretty fast when you’re getting the hang of downloading your favorite games, using the DVR capability of the Plex Media Server to record on a writable location, or using the Camera Upload feature of the server.

Game Controller

Similar to the basic SHIELD TV model, NVIDIA excluded the game controller in this package (which previously came in as part of a bundle).

I don’t see the point of making its gaming feature more advanced but with the missing game controller in the bundle.

New NVIDIA buyers shouldn’t be deprived of the same components that were available in the previous model, in my opinion.

But then again, there are cheaper but equally competitive compatible game controllers available.

In addition, it still doesn’t have a bundled HDMI cable in the package so users need to purchase a separate HDMI 2.0-compliant cable.

Performance

As stated above, there’s really no big difference between the performance of the 2019 and older versions of the Pro edition.

Save for the AI-Enhanced Upscaling and a cool remote control, I find that while I experienced no system crash since I started using it, I get to have the same experience as what I had with the older model.

Price

For a 4K streamer at $199.99, it’s still a bit expensive for such product in this category even if the older version still retails for $279.99 (as of this writing) at Amazon.

If movie and TV streaming is more of a concern to you instead of gaming, other device players such as the Amazon Firestick at $49.99 is good enough for most of your cord-cutting needs.

Content and features

The performance differences between the Shield TV and the Shield TV Pro may not be night and day, but the Pro does confer two huge benefits: expanded smart-home functionality, and the ability to host a media server.

First off, you should be aware that both the Shield TV and the Shield TV Pro have smart- home functionality. You can program Google Routines into either device, and both are fully compatible with both Google Assistant and Alexa. However, the default Shield TV can’t act as a smart-home hub by itself; you still need to run a hub through a phone, computer or other device.

The Shield TV Pro, on the other hand, can be a hub for Samsung SmartThings, thanks to its two USB ports in the back. That means you can use the Shield TV Pro as a command center for a variety of security cameras, light bulbs, motion sensors, smart outlets, programmable buttons and more. If the idea of controlling your whole house from your TV appeals to you, the Shield TV Pro offers you more ways to do so.

If you want to run a Plex media server, the Shield TV Pro is your only option. To be clear: If you host a media server through your PC or phone, you can access your content with either version of Shield TV. But suppose you’re tired of keeping your computer or phone running for hours on end, and would rather keep everything together in a dedicated entertainment device. The Shield TV Pro hooked up to an external hard drive might be just the ticket.
