Contribute to OSM via OsmAnd
OsmAnd supports directly contributing to the OSM database, both online and offline. Corrections are either uploaded to the OSM database instantly, or in offline mode, must be manually uploaded later.
First, you will need to register with OSM.
Then, in OsmAnd go to Settings > Plugins and activate OSM Editing plugin.
Finally, go to Settings > OSM editing and enter your OSM user name and password.
To add a POI
- Tap (long tap) on a location on the map you want the POI to appear.
- Tap the gray location box.
- Select «Create POI».
- Type in the information in each of the fields. The other box automatically adds the key for each value selected.
- Adding address is still a little clunky but can be done.
- Select «Advanced Mode».
- Select «Add Tag».
- Type «A» in the tag box. You can’t see the whole field, so you just have to remember what spot each value is in.
- Type the value in.
- Tap Commit.
To record and submit GPX tracks
- Go to Settings > Plugins and activate the Record your trips plugin.
- Go to the map and tap the button labeled GPX in the top-right corner of the screen, below the button with the satellite dish. This will start recording your trip.
- When you have finished your trip, tap the button again to stop recording.
- Go to My Places > All Tracks.
- Find the recorded track, and tap its menu (3 dots on right hand side)
- Select Export
- Edit details if required and tap YES

OsmAnd Sample
OsmAnd Sample represents a possiblity to built an application on top of OsmAnd core. OsmAnd provides an java library with lots of functions included. Please take a look at the source code. OsmAnd Sample is not an API use case and the LICENSE of OsmAnd Sample is the same as the OsmAnd application itself. It provides a possiblity to package and distribute it independently from OsmAnd.

There are 2 important things: OsmAnd uses third-party code only with permissive licenses like (LGPL, MIT, Apache) and OsmAnd code itself copyrighted by OsmAnd BV is distributed under GPLv2 license with exception of distributing it on Google Play markets without permission. That provides a possibility to build any application for personal usage or build an opensource application under GPLv2 license (cause OsmAnd is not a platform and all the code built on top of the core must be also licensed as GPL).
If you want to build an application for internal usage, please contact business@osmand.net, in some cases exemption from GPLv2 cody copyrighted by OsmAnd BV are provided. OpenStreetMap map data and the OsmAnd application
OpenStreetMap (map data and server side components) and OsmAnd (Android / Java software for mobile use and navigation) are two large, open projects, therefore support concerns need to be initially divided between OpenStreetMap «data» issues, and OsmAnd «software» issues. For instance, problems with the underlying map data (key and value omissions, way connection errors, inconsistencies, etc.) can cause OsmAnd to navigate inefficiently and miss the very best routes. Once the underlying map data is completely cleansed or fully complete OsmAnd software should produce expected results.
The OsmAnd rendered map data files are frequently updated, and each update typically has hundreds if not thousands of corrections and additions. Likewise, Points of Interest (POI) data in particular requires constant vigilance to remain relevant and accurate with numerous organizations moving, or going in or out of business each month. Supplying correcting map information to the OpenStreetMap organization is very easy. You can simply just report problems, and that by itself is very helpful. Or you can actually roll up your sleeves and edit the map data directly. After registering (a simple, two-minute process) you can use the free, very simple to use programs to edit the underlying data directly.
Please do your share of the hard work it is to keep the underlying OpenStreetMap data in pristine condition.
Some advanced fragments of information about OsmAnd offline vector map data
- offline map data files that can be used with OsmAnd have *.obf as file extension.
- in latest versions of these map files all vector map data, POIs and address indexes for offline search are included.
- you can generate your own *.obf files by using OsmAndMapCreator.
- when you have several *.obf files for single regions of a certain country, you can combine them with inspector.bat or inspector.sh that is delivered with OsmAndMapCreator. Start this script on a command line without any parameters to see all options and proceed.
- Maybe there is a named street in the OSM data, but OsmAnd cannot find it via its offline address search? Run the above mentioned inspector with parameter -v and .obf >list.txt … this will give you a text file with all places that are within that obf file and all streets that are associated to that place. Thus you can find out whether OsmAnd’s street list is incomplete (this can have several reasons like missing administrative borders etc.).

Тепловые карты треков
В Страве есть очень крутая штука под названием тепловая карта треков. По ней сразу всё наглядно видно, где люди ходят и ездят на велосипедах.
К примеру, на скриншоте справа отчётливо видна популярная у велосипедистом тропа, отсутствующая на карте OpenStreetMap.
Чтобы подключить в OsmAnd слой тепловой карты, воспользуемся функцией «Карта покрытия». Для его работы будет требоваться мобильный интернет, но в наши дни это не проблема.
Сперва нужно зарегистрировать тепловую карту как источник карт в OsmAnd.
Нажмите кнопку «Слои» → «Источник карты» → последний пункт «Задать/отредактировать» → заполняем данные формы. Название — Strava, URL — http://globalheat.strava.com/tiles/cycling/color3/{0}/{1}/{2}.png, остальное по-умолчанию. Можно варьировать тип активности (cycling/running) и набор цветов (color1..color7).
Переключите «Источник карты» обратно на векторную карту.
Нажмите кнопку «Слои» → «Карта покрытия» → выберите «Strava».
В качестве слоя покрытия может выступать не только Strava. Есть и ряд других не менее интересных вариантов.

Customize routing engine
In some cases you might want to extend or adjust routing experience of OsmAnd, so you could add extra parameters, add extra barriers or change some penalties. Please take a look at routing.xml. OsmAnd routing is using 2 directional A* algorithm based on fastest time (= distance/(speed*priority) + penalties) . It is a pretty easy format. It is divided into 7 sections (evaluation groups):
- access (1 allow, -1 not allow)
- speed (number that presents speed in kmh)
- priority (number between 0 and 1) — a multiplier to the speed and it is still bound to maxSpeed, so minimum(speed * multiplier, maxSpeed) will be used for A*
- oneway (1, -1 or 0) — used to clarify access based on direction of the movement
- penalty_transition (penalty in seconds) — used to define penalty when user goes from high class road to low class road. For example, motorway — 10, trunk — 15, if user goes from motorway to trunk penalty will be 5 seconds (=10 — 15). This penalty will be used by A* algorithm. There is no penalty if user goes from motorway to trunk and there is no penalty if route continues from motorway to motorway.
- obstacle (penalty in seconds) — defines penalty which is to the routing time
- obstacle_time (penalty in seconds) — defines penalty which is displayed to the user but it is not considered by routing engine i.e. obstacle_time — 2 hours, obstacle — 1 minute, on the shortest route engine will find a route using 1 minute obstacle but user will see that route time is 2 hours.
Стиль отображения карты
В варианте по-умолчанию стиль отрисовки карты довольно блеклый. Грунтовки и тропинки отображаются недостаточно ярко, и разглядеть их на экране телефона под ярким солнцем сложно.
Нажмите кнопку «Слои» (она же «настройка карты») → выберите режим, для которого вносите настройки: авто, вело или пешеход → прокрутите вниз до раздела «Отображение карты».
Для режима «велосипед» у меня настройки стоят следующие:
Стиль карты → Touring view
Дневной/ночной режим → Дневной
Транспорт → ничего
Подробности → отмечены «более подробно», «отображать тип покрытия», «отображать качество дорог», «отображать ограничения доступа»
Маршруты → отмечены «отображать веломаршруты», «пеший горный туризм по шкале SAC».
В стиле «Touring view» длина штриха показывает качество дороги или тропы. Длинный шрих — дорога хорошая, короткий — плохая (параметр tracktype:grade1..grade5 в OSM)
Галочка «отображать тип покрытия» рисует под дорогами толстый пунктир определённого цвета, цвет обозначает тип покрытия. Серый — асфальт, фиолетовый — гравий, светло-синий — бетон, желтый — песок, зелёный — трава и т.д.
Галочка «пеший горный туризм по шкале SAC» раскрашивает дороги и тропы в определённые цвета, если для них задана сложность преодоления. В горах эта информация мегаактуальна. Цветовая маркировка соответствует официальной таблице SAC OSM.
T1 → специальным цветом не выделяется
T2 → красный сплошной
T3 → красный пунктирный
T4 → синий сплошной
T5 → синий пунктирный
По опыту, уровень сложности T1 на велосипеде проезжаем. T2 — непрост, но обычно проезжаем. T3 — со значительными сложностями и только вниз, T4 и выше — шансов проехать на велосипеде практически нет.
Естественно, помимо обозначения уровня сложности нужно смотреть на уклон. Там, где тропа пересекает горизонтали слишком часто, на велосипеде делать нечего.

Cloud backup and restore.
New paid function for subscription.
This function allows to make backup and restore all your OsmAnd data: settings, my places, resources. The size of storage is 3 — 50 — 1000 Gb.
Go to Menu → Settings → Backup & Restore. Select the data to be exported to backup storage.


‘OsmAnd Live’ updates (function of hourly map updates) moved to «Menu → Downloads maps → Updates».

We improved and updated «Trip recording» dialog.
Now you can see more detailed information and graphs (Overview, Altitude, Speed) of your trip.

Now, any track can be colored by altitude, speed, or slope.
Choose track on the map or in ‘My places → Tracks’, tap to ‘Appearance’ button.


Added option to change the route line appearance
Users can choose an appearance for route line:
Menu → Configure profile (choose app profile) → Profile appearance → Customize route line

Users can choose online routing engines for navigation type:
Menu → Configure profile (choose app profile) → Navigation settings → Navigation type → ‘Offline/Online’ button
Here you can use predefined templates, or add OSRM, GraphHopper, OpenRouteService, or GPX online routing.

‘Distance by tap’ moved from ‘Radius ruler’ into a separate option
We separated ‘Distance by tap’ option from ‘Radius ruler’ tool.
Now, you can find it in Menu → Configure screen → Remaining elements → Distance by tap.


‘Plan Route’ improvements
At this release, we continued to improve our tool.
Now, you can see a landscape of your trip planning by switching between points and graphs (Overview, Altitude, Slope, Road type, Surface, Steepness) tabs.


We added the ability to change navigation options, accessing configure map and search without leaving ‘Plan route’ tool. Just, you need to click buttons on the screen.


Now, there is a new ‘Purchases’ screen with detailed information about purchasing and ‘Restore purchases’ button.

New Language dialogue for Voice prompts
Redesigned dialog for selecting the language for navigation instructions. Now it’s easier to choose and download the needed language and type of voice guidance:
Menu → Configure profile → Navigation settings → Voice prompts → Language.

Настройки → Управление файлами карт → вкладка Загрузки → наверху нажмите там где «полные карты», выберите «Карты с затемнённым рельефом» и «Карты SRTM», выберите нужные районы и нажмите внизу «Загрузить».
Нажмите кнопку «Слои» и отметьте пункт «Слой рельефа местности».
Карта приобрела достойный вид, по ней наконец-то можно прочитать горный рельеф.

It is advised to create a dependent style so you could change start changing style by small pieces. For example UniRS style contains mostly color redefinition and icon appearance.
To test rendering style you could use OsmAndMapCreator. In case you would like to use in the OsmAnd on device. You need to put the xml definition of the style into folder on sdcard (‘rendering’) next to other rendering styles.

Weaknesses
- No live traffic data
- No 3D view
- Limited voice instructions in embedded pre-recorded voices, but synthesized TTS (text to speech) voices can be used and are better maintained
- Very confusing options and configurations although it has a «clean» main screen interface
- Slow in some older smartphones
- Limited support to areas (can edit only tags in some areas) and relations (only shows route relations associated to POIs)
- A bit limited in some edits to upload to OpenStreetMap like: no tag presets, no edits in way tags
- Doesn’t support radar relations, only radar POIs/nodes, but is a planned feature
- No version available in Android Auto, but will be available in near future
- Limited in very long routes in offline app calculation, like 200km or more, although possible with Third-party routing (BRouter)
- Always shows the best route according to configuration like avoid tolls, unpaved roads, but not alternative routes
OsmAnd Support
OsmAnd is a large software project with millions of users worldwide. Relatively few people actually do the work to provide virtually everyone with a great application, built upon great data. If you have a support issue and resolve it through a convoluted, time consuming process, please go back and help update the FAQ, the Wiki, the Forum pages, etc. and make the path from support question to satisfactory answer as straight as possible. Make it much easier for the next person with the same issue to get to the solution. Help the coders document and best express the program’s features, and explain all the typical use-cases. If you have Java programming experience by all means refactor, streamline and better document the running code, add well tested new features, and take it upon yourself to tackle any open item on the Issue List.
High quality, timely support requires many hands to make light the lifting. Please pitch in and contribute to OSMand’s on-going support needs in any way you can.

Customize routing engine
In some cases you might want to extend or adjust routing experience of OsmAnd, so you could add extra parameters, add extra barriers or change some penalties. Please take a look at routing.xml. OsmAnd routing is using 2 directional A* algorithm based on fastest time (= distance/(speed*priority) + penalties) . It is a pretty easy format. It is divided into 7 sections (evaluation groups):
- access (1 allow, -1 not allow)
- speed (number that presents speed in kmh)
- priority (number between 0 and 1) — a multiplier to the speed and it is still bound to maxSpeed, so minimum(speed * multiplier, maxSpeed) will be used for A*
- oneway (1, -1 or 0) — used to clarify access based on direction of the movement
- penalty_transition (penalty in seconds) — used to define penalty when user goes from high class road to low class road. For example, motorway — 10, trunk — 15, if user goes from motorway to trunk penalty will be 5 seconds (=10 — 15). This penalty will be used by A* algorithm. There is no penalty if user goes from motorway to trunk and there is no penalty if route continues from motorway to motorway.
- obstacle (penalty in seconds) — defines penalty which is to the routing time
- obstacle_time (penalty in seconds) — defines penalty which is displayed to the user but it is not considered by routing engine i.e. obstacle_time — 2 hours, obstacle — 1 minute, on the shortest route engine will find a route using 1 minute obstacle but user will see that route time is 2 hours.
